Sports, Clubs & Societies at Haridwar University: Complete Student Activities Guide (2026)

Mrs. Nisha Dhiman

Student Welfare Officer, Haridwar University

When I speak to students about university life, I often tell them that the classroom is only one part of the experience. Sports, cultural activities, fitness, community service and student events create opportunities to discover interests, work with others and take responsibility.

At Haridwar University, these activities are spread across sports facilities, cultural participation, NCC, NSS, yoga, fitness programmes and university events. This guide brings those opportunities together for students, particularly those joining HU for the first time.

Sports at Haridwar University

Sports remain one of the most visible parts of student activity at HU. The university organises the Zonal Sports Fest, The Sports Carnival, bringing students from different universities and institutions together for competition and interaction. The university lists cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, athletics, table tennis, chess, carrom, kabaddi and kho-kho among the sports in which students participate.

The campus facilities include:

Outdoor Facilities Indoor and Fitness Facilities
Basketball court Billiards
Lawn tennis court Table tennis
Volleyball court Carrom
Shuttle badminton court Chess
Football field Modern gymnasium
Cricket pitch and field Sports trainer
Athletic track Hostel indoor games

The university also provides indoor sports facilities separately in hostels, giving residential students opportunities for recreation beyond class hours.

The Sports Carnival is described by HU as an annual zonal event. The university's alumni page identifies November as the usual month for the event, although students should follow current university notifications for dates.

Fitness, Yoga and Wellness

For students who prefer fitness to competitive sport, HU has a dedicated gymnasium with separate general-exercise and weight-training sections. Equipment listed by the university includes treadmills, multi-gym equipment, weight plates, Smith machines, dumbbells, benches, cross trainers and steppers. The gym has separate morning and evening timings for girls and boys.

Yoga provides another regular option. HU lists morning sessions from 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM, evening relaxation sessions from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, weekend workshops and special stress-management sessions during examination periods.

In June 2026, HU also celebrated International Yoga Day in collaboration with 84 UK BN NCC, Roorkee.

Cultural Activities and Student Expression

Cultural participation gives students another way to contribute to campus life. HU's Madhuram Dance Club is a documented example. The university describes it as a student organisation founded in 2010, welcoming students from beginners to advanced performers.

The club's published activities include an annual dance showcase, classical dance workshop, dance competition and regular practice sessions. Its membership information states that students can join without previous dance experience.

"For me, this is an important point for first-year students: participation does not have to begin with expertise. It can begin with curiosity and the willingness to practise."

Technical Events and the Student Calendar

Technical activities also form part of the university's annual programme. HU's official 2025-26 academic calendar scheduled a Technical Fest for 8–9 April 2026, followed by the annual fest UTKARSH on 13–14 April 2026. The same calendar scheduled Sports Week for 26–28 March 2026.

Student Activity 2026 Date in the 2025-26 Calendar
Sports Week 26–28 March
Technical Fest 8–9 April
Annual Fest, UTKARSH 13–14 April

Dates are taken from the official 2025-26 academic calendar and may change through university notifications.

This calendar gives students a useful rhythm: academic work is accompanied by dedicated periods for sport, technical activities and cultural celebration.

NCC and NSS: Activities with Responsibility

Students looking for structured leadership and service opportunities can explore NCC and NSS.

HU's NCC programme lists activities including Republic Day Parade, Annual Training Camp, adventure activities, shooting training, social service and cultural programmes. The university identifies "Unity & Discipline" as the NCC motto.

NSS provides another route into community engagement. HU states that undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate, with a minimum one-year commitment listed among the eligibility requirements. Activities described on the university page include blood donation, tree plantation, cleanliness drives, health awareness, village outreach and digital literacy initiatives.

These experiences can develop practical qualities such as teamwork, responsibility, communication and leadership. However, I would advise students to think of these as development opportunities rather than guaranteed CV advantages. What matters professionally is what the student actually contributed, organised or learned.

How Should First-Year Students Get Involved?

My practical advice is simple: start early, try more than one activity and then commit to what genuinely interests you.

First-Year Action What It Can Help Develop
Attend a sports activity Fitness and teamwork
Explore a cultural activity Confidence and creativity
Join NCC/NSS Discipline, service and responsibility
Attend technical events Exposure and problem-solving
Participate in university fests Communication and collaboration
Take responsibility for an activity Leadership and organisation

Students should also check current notices, activity coordinators and event announcements because schedules and participation processes can change.

Building Your University Experience

A strong student profile is not created by collecting certificates alone. It develops through consistent participation.

A student who plays for a university team may learn teamwork under pressure. Someone involved in NSS may learn how to coordinate volunteers. A cultural participant may develop confidence through performance. A student taking responsibility for an event may learn planning, communication and time management.

These are observations from student life, not promises of employment outcomes.

At HU, the range is deliberately broad: sport, fitness, culture, technical events, service and leadership can sit alongside academic learning.

For prospective students, I would therefore look beyond the question, "What facilities does the university have?" The more useful question is, "What will I actually participate in?"

At Haridwar University, there are multiple starting points.
